Halloween Beer Review: Shocktop Candy Corn Wheat
I know I teased on instagram that I would be reviewing Halloween Sunny D today, but I had to pull a wild card! I was able to secure a 6 pack of honest to goodness Candy Corn flavored beer. In a partnership between Shocktop beer and Spirit Halloween. Some back story on shock top. I turned 21 in 2003, right about the time Blue Moon was blowing up on the scene and the verge of the craft beer boom. Blue Moon was the first beer I tried that I really liked, and it got me into craft beer and pumpkin ales. I went to the beer distributor to buy a case of Blue Moon “Harvest Pumpkin Wheat” one October (it used to be only sold in October) and they didn’t have it, and the guy said it was crap and sold me on a case of Fegley’s local pumpkin ale.
The craft beer boom made Anheuser-Busch to make Shock Top to compete with Coors’ Blue Moon. A lot of people said it was crap, I never really liked it. But I kept drinking Wheat Beers. I was at Ye Old Tavern one night and asked for a blue moon. They didnt have it but gave me a Sam Adams White Ale, at the time their Spring beer. I became obsessed and that summer I had my first Sam Summer Ale, and the rest is history (it’s still to this day my favorite beer)
Anyway, Shocktop was sold off in 2023 because of bunch of people got their precious feelings hurt that bud light gave a personalized can of their shitty beer to a trans woman. In a free for all, they unloaded assets and sold Shocktop to Tilray brands.
Here we are today, they partnered with Spirit Halloween to make a Candy Corn Wheat Ale and I’m going to try it for you today and let you know what I think.
It honestly smells like candy corn, it’s insane. I took a small sip first and it doesn’t tase much like a wheat beer and it isn’t cloudy like a wheat beer, but it does have a Candy Corn aftertaste, and as someone who doesn’t care for Candy Corn I say that in a good way. It’s not overly sweet, I could probably drink a 6 pack of this. This beer is definitely something you should stock alongside some pumpkin beer and beer wolf and Elvira approved Coors lights (for decoration only) for any Halloween party’s you’re throwing this year. Shock Top’s website say’s it’s Flavor Cues are Candy Corn and So good, it’s scary. They say it’s Pairings are with Halloween Parties, Sneaking Extra Candy and Wearing your new Wedgehead jumpsuit (which is Shocktop’s mascot costume you can buy exclusively at Spirit Halloween). And it has an ABV of 5.0%
I love this beer, and I picked up 2 six packs of it, I’ll prob save them for trick or Treat night, alongside some good Pumpkin beers (which I plan to review a bunch in October)
Are you gonna go hunt for Candy Corn beer? Or do you think this sounds gross? Let me know in the comments
