Halloween Sunny Delight "Sunny D Spooky D"

Okay, I promise you this countdown is going to be more than just a Halloween Junk Food review page, but for now, thats what we’re doing. Entering the fray this season is Sunny D, or as we knew it as kids “Sunny Delight” I drank tons of this stuff as a kid. My mom wouldn’t let us drink soda, and would buy cans, giant metal cans of various juices we’d have to crack open with the can opener stuck to the fridge via magnet. Hi-c, Hawaiian Punch, Juicy Juice amongst other, but then we got a taste of Sunny Delight, which was sold cold in the same aisle as the milk. This stuff was no better for you than soda but back then parents didn’t have other parents lecturing them on Facebook to know any better. I guess this blowing up in my house coincided with Proctor and Gamble buying the parent company of Sunny delight in 1989. Then the commercials started airing “soda, purple stuff, SUNNY D!” People called it Sunny D so much that it was rebranded to Sunny D in the early 2000’s.

When I was a kid there were 3 flavors, original, California style and Strawberry. I only wanted the original always and forever, but now there are a dozen flavors including the limited edition Halloween flavor, “Spooky D” I had to try it but unfortunately Sunny D now only comes in what seemed like 5 gallon tubs (okay it was only a gallon but this thing is still fucking huge”. They still only sell this stuff cold at Walmart so I grabbed this big bastard of a bottle and poured a glass. It’s a mystery flavor and it is chalky white translucent kind of like an non-carbonated Mtn Dew Voodew. Once I smelled it and tried a sip, I realized that isn’t where the similarities ended. This tasted like an non-carbonated Voodew. Its got a generic fruit candy flavor in my opinion like skittles or smarties or sweet tarts. Not bad, just not my cup of tea, but kudos to Sunny D for trying something this year! When they release the mystery flavor, I'm sure it’ll be like “fruity halloween candy” but hopefully they come back next year with a new Spooky D, but make it pitch black purple and call it “PURPLE STUFF” haha.
