Halloween Cassette Walking
What a weird title? Sorry, It’s been a week since I’ve check in and it’s been a busy one! The weather here in the northeast is finally not HORRIBLY hot for a few days, and that means at night it gets a little cooler. I like to get my steps in at night and usually walk around listening to podcasts or music, but in an effort to disconnect from my phone, I wanted to find a way to go out on my walks without it. I have an apple watch with a cellular plan that I finally got set up so I still have a life line in case of emergency. Since I have a pretty big tape collection, I figured I would buy a portable cassette player for my walks. I went with one from We Are Rewind. It’s also orange so spooky right? This cassette player has bluetooth, but I wanted to further disconnect so I bought a wired pair of headphones, the “Linsoul Kefine Klean 10mm DLC Diaphragm Dynamic Driver in Ear Monitor, 2Pin” off Amazon for about 50 bucks. I’ve been sitting on these two items in the package since January, I guess after 8 months its a good time to finally open them.
As for tapes, I have a lot of spooky tapes in my collection, many thanks to my years of membership to the Dinosaur Dracula Fun pack subscription. But I wanted more variety, and recordable tapes are still very available and very cheap, so I bought a whole bunch of them and started making my own mixes on Apple Music, then recording them to tape. I even recorded some of those spooky sounds tapes from YouTube onto tape. I have some on the card but those aren’t for opening.

Once I had some tapes to listen to I went out on a cool spooky night for a walk, no iPhone, no bluetooth. I made a perfect mix, 45 minutes of the Great Pumpkin soundtrack on one side, 45 minutes of the Halloween 3 soundtrack on side 2. Walking around, listening to the analog recordings while thinking of Halloween memories is such a dopamine hit. Bonus points if someone has a campfire going nearby. Just picture yourself in fall of 1993. You’re 11 years old, in 6th grade. It might be one of your last times trick or treating with your parents so you want to make sure you have a cool costume. When you get home, you know your mom and sister will be watching Hocus Pocus that they recorded off Pay-Per-View for the 1000th time, but you watch, you secretly love it. Maybe you’ll grab some Halloween Oreos as a snack. Life is good. Sound off in the comments what you would listen to on your new spooky tape player.
